Porcelain inlays or onlays are tooth coloured fillings that are fitted into or onto the tooth. They are best used when there is too little tooth structure to effectively support a white filling, but there is enough tooth to avoid placing a crown, which is more invasive and destructive to the tooth.

Inlays and onlays can be used to restore areas of decay or damage that are too extensive to be treated with a normal filling. They are a long lasting restorative solution, often placed in teeth at the back of the mouth. Inlays and onlays can also be made using gold, which creates a particularly durable option.

What does the treatment involve?

You will need two appointments to complete your inlay or onlay treatment. During your first visit, we painlessly remove the decay or old filling from your tooth. We also take a detailed impression of your tooth and place a temporary filling to protect your tooth between appointments.

Your custom made inlay or onlay is created by skilled technicians in a laboratory. Once it is ready, approximately two weeks after your first visit, we bond it to your tooth.

Why have
an inlay?

The main advantage of porcelain inlays and onlays is that they are much more durable than white fillings.

Fillings can reduce the strength of a tooth, but inlays and onlays can increase the tooth’s strength and durability.
